Personal Legend

Hi everyone and welcome to my travel blog. The title, "Personal Legend" was inspired by the book The Alchemist authored by Paulo Coelho. Hopefully it can somewhat serve as inspiration to all of those who are considering "checking out" for a while or taking a trip to find their own Personal Legend. I am creating this to not only keep in touch with everyone but to also keep people current during my "Walkabout". I will attempt to update it every week and a half (or so) with new pictures ( and some commentary). If anyone is interested in meeting up with me along the journey or has any suggestions of some "can't miss" destinations, just drop me a note.

Sorry it took a while to put together but I wanted it properly populated upon rollout.

Enjoy.

Amsterdam, Hamburg, Cologne and Berlin

Hello family and friends,

It's been a hot minute since I updated you all on my "walkabout".  A few days in Amsterdam isn't good for the memory cells but I digress....

I hung out in Amsterdam for a few days and although they are famed for their Red Light District, Canals and various Museums, I found there to be an absolute overload of bicycles.  So much so that they have a separate lane for them in addition to car-lanes and sidewalks; go figure.  Not being used to this phenomenon, I almost got "picked for six" a few times by an innocent bicyclist for simply not paying attention...

Bikes...
Bikes...

And more bikes...

Now something a bit more enjoyable; The Heineken Factory.... talk about a global brand!

The Heineken "badges" over the years

Prost (cheers)...

From Amsterdam I went to Hamburg (Altona) to visit my good friend Joern.  It was a good opportunity for some "down time" given my hectic schedule up to this point...

The symbol of Altona; 2 horsemen fighting over a fish or perhaps a Tuna-fish? Interesante...

Hamburg Harbor at Sunset

Me at the Hamburg Harbor. It kind of looks like the shipyard in Oakland; maybe I really haven't left the Bay....

The Original Smart Car...

Cologne for a few days:  Famous Hohenzollern Bridge

Berlin:  Such an Awesome City.  I would encourage anybody to check it out

... Bunol, Valencia and Marrakech

All-Righty then...

Here are some of the pics I got at La Tomatina festival in Bunol as well as Valencia.  Still in Morocco at the moment but I have some pretty good ones so far.... (at least I think so...)

Thanks for checking in and feel free to share my URL with anybody who you think would enjoy...

Bunol -  (pronounced Bun-yol, but I can't figure out how to do the squiggly line above the "N")

La tomatina festival occurs the last Wednesday of August in a small town named Bunol, about 40 minutes outside of Valencia.  Traditionally people dress in white and the tomatoes don't show up until someone grabs a ham from atop a greased pole.  In the meantime, people are ripping t-shirts off of each other and throwing them around in a dodgeball type setting.  I don't have any pics of the tomato throwing (no waterproof camera) but have some of the before and aftermath.

The Lead up:

The Church where they place the greased pole

T-Shirt Time!! (this was actually just as fun as the tomato throwing)

After Pic. (I'm laughing because as this picture was being taken, the photographer got hit in the ear with a tomato)

The Massive Crowd just after the final cannon sounded

Another Crowd pic.

Valencia: This coastal City in Southern Spain was actually founded by 2,000 Roman Soldiers as a retirement community.  Among being the center of Arts and Sciences in Spain, it is known for its Paella and Horchata (the real one made with tiger nuts not found in Taquerias) but even something "yours truly" didn't know, Valencia introduced the world to oranges.  This is a great city definitely worth visitng and I found the street art to be very cool as well.

Sahara Desert Excursion: We started our 4-hour drive to the Sahara at 7am stopping in different towns and saw many mountain ranges along the way before riding camels to our campsite for the night.  We slept outside and woke up a t 5am to watch the sunrise.  Although our excursion was only 2 days/ 1 night, an alternative one can be booked for 54 days if anyone is interested....

The Ait Ben Hadam Kasbah - If this looks familiar to anyone, you have likely seen it in several movies; Gladiator, The Mummy, Indiana Jones.
